Fairytale Castle Bojnice

The Bojnice Castle – A gorgeous castle in Slovakia!

According to an agreement between my husband and myself, which we made years ago, we go to visit a castle of my choosing per trip since then and he has at least one day for himself to go mountain biking. On the way I`ve chosen a very special castle for these holidays. One that is worthy to sacrifice my “only castle” for it. I quickly found it online (I always use picture search to find something quickly) and decided to go for the Bojnice Castle.

A detour that was worthwhile

Very well I had chosen “my” castle. I wasn`t disappointed in any way. My expectations were even exceeded. Afer the first look at the castle the detour of about one hour and 45 minutes (almost one hour of which we were stuck in a traffic jam because of construction sites) was forgotten.

What Bojnice Castle offers

A beautiful castle, how it`s set in scene there, with all its light blue towers, on an elevation and surrounded by a moat. There are even swans swimming in the water. What a picture! A real jewel, which I had absolutely not expected. I still don’t understand why this castle isn`t better known to us. It’s not exactly near Switzerland, I know. But nowadays you travel all over the world. Anyway, I`m very happy about my discovery and can recommend a visit to anyone who can fit it into their travel list.

I also liked the nearby small pond with the “mini castle” in the middle and the bridge that leads there.

Cozy mini-tourist village close to the entrance to the castle

On the short way from the parking lot to the entrance of the castle there`s a kind of mini tourist village on the left. The small houses and the shops that were inside were lovely. In this cozy courtyard there`s a restaurant, which has an outside and an inside area. In the late afternoon, when we were there, a band was rehearsing for their concert. It’s certainly a great atmosphere when a live band is playing there in the evening. When we were there the whole area and also the castle was nearly extinct. Which was more than okay for me. Like this I was able to take a lot of pictures without someone who`s in my way all the time. 🙂

Info and tips:

  • Here`s the Bojnice Castle, Zámok a okolie 1, 972 01 Bojnice
  • The stay around the castle, as well as the adjoining park and up to the first part of the courtyard is free of charge.
  • If you want to see the whole courtyard, the interiors, the grotto and the museum, you need to pay 10 euros entrance fee per person.
  • According to the castle’s own website, the visit`s free of charge for a certain number of people every first Sunday of the month in 2020.
  • There are also guided tours for the interiors and to the caves. During the main season they will be held not only in Slovak, but also in English and German. It`s best to ask at the entrance first and spend any waiting time with taking pictures of the outer facade and the small pond near the park, in the restaurant or cafe in the immediate vicinity (or check it online in advance to see when the tours will take place in your desired language).
  • From the parking lot towards the entrance there`s a small, kind of tourist village. There`s also a restaurant and a cafe.
  • In the castle you could get married on Sunday evenings and the restaurant mentioned above also hosts wedding dinners. 😉
