This is how our spectacular day trip to the Brienzer Rothorn was
The evening before we started thinking about what we could do the next day. We decided to do something in the mountains. But then I immediately said: “But I don’t feel like going on a hike of several hours, but a leisurely Sunday excursion, aight”. It was good that the numerous photos of the view from the Brienzer Rothorn onto the Lake Brienz came back to my mind. Years ago I had read some exciting reports about that steam locomotive. So far there hasn`t been any opportunity for this excursion. But now it was time for us to experience it for ourselves. What could be better than a beautiful day in autumn.
Brienzer Rothorn Bahn – The only rack railway in Switzerland that runs on steam!
It has been in operation since 1892 and still delights people almost as much as it did back then.
We arrived in Brienz much too early, but this is an advantage, as one can immediately go to the cash desk to buy the tickets. And as soon as they let you go to the locomotive, you have the possibility to choose your seat. If you don’t show up until shortly before departure, the seats will only be filled up and it`s possible that a group of people, who belong together, will be separated.
The ride up to the Brienzer Rothorn – simply great!
The departure itself was already very spectacular. For several minutes steam was pouring out, some onlookers had gathered in sight and when it started after a loud Tuuuut, we felt the tingling of anticipation for the upcoming trip. With a top speed of 9 km/h and a lot of steaming and stomping we leisurely went to the Rothorn, situated at 2’351 m. above sea level. The pleasure lasted 100 minutes. Plenty of time to lean back, enjoy the wonderful view and absorb the power of nature.
Once you reach the top, you cannot help but be amazed. The view of Lake Brienz and the mountain world`s overwhelming.
Berghaus Alpine Lodge
But you can still get away from it, cause you`re already looking forward to the pleasure of the return journey. But before, we enjoyed a really tasty Rösti (a typical Swiss dish made from grated and crispy roasted potatoes) on the terrace of the Berghaus Alpine Lodge. One of the best Rösti I`ve ever had!

Like this we were able to enjoy the stunning view a little longer.
During this time we could also watch a locomotive ride from above.
Walk along the lake of Brienz
Back in Brienz we took advantage of the still sunny weather for a walk and a dessert at the lake.
My conclusion on the day trip to the Brienzer Rothorn
I`m very happy that I can now share these special moments indirectly with you. If you (like me before this day) haven’t had the chance to make this trip yet, I strongly recommend you to keep it in mind for a day in the future.
A great and extremely comfortable day out in our beautiful Switzerland!
Even if it wasn`t exactly cheap, it was totally worth it.
