Lake Oeschinen 2.0

Our second attempt to see the Lake Oeschinen – Successful this time!

Why second attempt?

2 years ago we already spent a weekend in Kandersteg. After a 3-hour hike we arrived at our destination, the Lake Oeschinen. But to our disappointment, due to a lot of fog, we saw see zero point zero from the lake. To be precise, we couldn’t even guess where it should have been…

So we took advantage of the absolutely fantastic autumn weather in the middle of October and ventured a second attempt. This time the weather was on our side and it continued until we arrived at the lake late in the afternoon. 🙂

Where we stayed overnight

First we checked in at a campsite called Camping Rendez- vous right at the valley station of the cable car. We were lucky and got the very last free lot. Phew…

Here you can find more detailes about the campsite Rendez-vous in Kandersteg.

How to get to Lake Oeschinen

After that we went straight to the lake. This time we took the cable car up and down due to time constraints. The 30 minute walk from the Lake Oeschinen train station to the lake itself was very pleasant and offered a beautiful view.

Temporarily it was quite cloudy, but at least it was dry and this time there was no fog far and wide. 😉

Just before we wanted to return to the train, the sun showed up more and the clouds almost disappeared. Perfect for some not so gloomy photos. 🙂

Restaurant Nico`s

For dinner we went to restaurant Nico`s in the centre of Kandersteg. Good that I had made a reservation, as the restaurant was extremely well frequented when we arrived there.

The autumn dinner was really good and creative! Also the service was great. But unfortunately we had to wait almost an hour between the starter and the main course. They kindly made up for with a small snack on the house in that time. Probably something had gone wrong in the kitchen. Something can always happen there. Anyway, we had no stress, so we didn`t mind that much.

The restaurant belongs to the Hotel Alfa Soleil, Äusseredorfstrasse 99, Kandersteg., Tel.:+41 33 675 84 84.

You can find the opening hours on the restaurant’s website. There you can also book directly online.

Difficulties falling asleep and the next day

Since the campground had an Oktoberfest evening, it was a little bit difficult for me to fall asleep (my husband always sleeps like a rock anyway). Surprisingly, I was quite recovered the next morning and so we could start to the car transport for our hike at Lötschental in bright sunshine.

You can find the article about the fantastic High Altitude Panorama Hike in the Lötschental under this link.

Info and tips:

  • Campingplatz Rendez-vous, Hubleweg. Highly recommended by me. The owners are very nice and helpful and the location directly at the valley station of the cable car is perfect for hiking and to get quickly to the Oeschinensee. (photo was taken during our first visit in June 2017).
  • From the station Lake Oeschinen it`s about 25 minutes on foot to the lake. But there`s also a kind of mini train, which is however subject to a fee.
  • At the lake there are two restaurants directly at the lake. Nothing special, but a very nice view.
  • It is said that in autumn there`s less fog around Lake Oeschinen than in summer. But in my opinion it`s a matter of luck. In any case there is more water in the lake from late summer on, which looks much nicer on photos.
  • From the campsite it`s a 5 minute car ride to Blausee, which is also worth a trip.
  • The chips made from their organic and self-bred trout were very tasty. 😉
  • Open Air Kino am Blausee is a must do when you’re in this area in June! The cozy cinema evening we enjoyed in this special environment 2 years ago, will be remembered for a long time. Unfortunately there will be no Open Air Cinema in 2020 due to the Corona Pandemic. Be sure to memorize it for 2021!
