Sion and the recreation area Domaines des Iles

That`s how our weekend in Sion was

Since we weren`t blessed with good weather at home this weekend, we spontaneously decided to spend a weekend in Sion and the surrounding area. A really good decision, cause the weather there was great and still warm. 🙂

Old town of Sion and the places of interest

During the day we strolled through old town.

Afterwards we walked to the ruins of the former episcopal castle Tourbillon.

The view from the ruins of the Tourbillon fortress over the vineyards, the city of Sion, the surrounding high mountain ranges of the Valais and Bernese mountains and the Basilique de Valère was very impressive!

Restaurant Ferme Asile

And in the evening we enjoyed a very tasty meal in the beautiful garden of the restaurant La Ferme Asile. The restaurant belongs to an artistic & cultural centre.

Funny details, like a bathtub converted into a dining table and rubber ducks on the tables made me smile a lot. Something different! But also the interior is very cool furnished.

The burger with a roll of croissant dough was very tasty. Also the apero plate and the chocolate cake!

Promenade des Pêcheurs 10, Sion, Tel.: +41 (0)27 203 40 98, Email: restaurant@ferme-asile.ch, Closed on Mondays, Tue – Sa 10:30 am – midnight, Su 10:30 am – 3 pm. Kitchen midday: 11:30 am – 2 pm, evening: 6:30 pm – 10 pm

The Mini Postbuses of Sion

The ultramodern self-controlled miniature Postbuses, that we saw in old town were something very special. To see a vehicle without a driver was something completely new for me. Really funny stuff.

The cactuses

What also amazed me were the numerous cactuses that grew wild. The occurrence of different species of cactus is to be attributed to the steppe climate, which also allows the many vines to thrive.

Domaines des Iles

Overnight we stayed on the parking lot of the recreation area Domaines des Iles in the immediate vicinity of the park entrance.

The entire complex extends over 54 hectares! In addition to the lake, there`s also a restaurant, a TCS-campsite, picnic areas for free use and various sports facilities, etc. (see link).

The next day we split up for interest. My husband went mountain biking and I relaxed a bit at the lake.

The lake is located 5 minutes by car from the city of Sion. Grand-Pont 12, Sion

My conclusion on Sion and the Domaines des Iles

I liked the city of Sion very much. The two hills that rise into the landscape and the view at the ruins of the Tourbillon fortress were really great! Old town`s rather small, but very cozy. The culinary highlight was the dinner in the restaurant Ferme Asile! Be sure to visit it if you`re ever in Sion. 😉

I also liked the recreation area Domaines des Iles! It has enough space and many picnic and barbecue areas. It`s also great for families.

Tip:

  • The Basilique de Valère is home to the oldest playable church organ in the world
