Prague – 1st stop of our camping trip to Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland
I`ve compiled a culinary guide for the city of Prague especially for you. After my next visit to Prague this guide will be extended. 😉 You can find the list of the very unusual restaurants (and bars) below.
For me, not only Prague, also Czech Republic, Poland and Slovakia in general was unknown territory. In our 2 years as happy VW van owners we`ve already seen a lot of Europe. But for these countries the time (and honestly the curiosity) had not been enough yet. To my shame I have to admit, that I didn’t really think much about these countries before. Except for the Tatra mountains. They were burned into my head, after I saw breathtaking pictures of them, a few years ago. And which luckily ended up on my travel wish list cause of that.
You can get to my article about the great day hike in the Tatra Mountains by clicking on this link.
About our time in the Tatra Mountains I`ve written a few more entries. If you`re interested, you can find them in My Travel under the category Poland.
A first visit to my brother, who has lived in Prague since 2019
But since my brother decided to move his residence from Switzerland to Prague last spring, we used the Ascension weekend to help him move. So finally the opportunity had come to integrate the Tatra mountains into a trip 🙂 We extended the trip to an 13-day road trip through Germany, Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Austria. We haven`t regretted this decision one bit. All our worries and prejudices (sorry, we just didn’t know any better) were unfounded and were refuted. The people were extremely hospitable, the food was fantastic, the cities very worth seeing and the nature in the Tatra region really beautiful. We didn`t experienced something like I saw on the pictures of the high Tatra, (you would need experience in high alpine mountains and climbing for that), but still we weren`t disappointed. Everyone who asked us where we came from laughed at us. Yes, I know we have beautiful mountains in Switzerland, but that’s the way people are. Far often we`re tempted by the distance, altough it`s so wonderful where we come from. 😉
A few impressions of Prague
The funny TV Tower
They also have a very original television tower. 😉 The crawling babies, created by artist David Cerny, are definitely an eye-catcher.
Campsite Prague Central Camp
We stayed overnight at the small campground Prague Central Camp. Within walking distance there`s a tram station (Vozovna Zizkov), which among other things goes directly to old town (line 9). The camping site is clean and has a playground. It also has an area with a bar and many benches outside and also inside. On some evenings there are also live concerts. Funny thing was that the camping site is in the middle of a residential area. We have never experienced something like this before.
For more information about the campsite click here for my separate entry about it.
My conclusion on Prague:
I liked Prague very much. Especially the many great restaurants have impressed me.
Since my brother plans to stay here for a longer time, it will certainly not have been my last visit to him and to this beautiful city.
Info and tips:
- The national currency of the Czech Republic is the Czech crown. 25.23 CZK = 1 Euro (as of Jan. 2020). In Prague, however, they often accept Euros.
- The city is “divided” into zones. Prague 1 is the old town area (in Czech Staré Město) , the other numbers of the districts are, I would say, rather randomly scattered 😉
- Campsite Prague Central Camp , Nad Ohradou 17, Prague 3 (extremely good location for a city campsite. Regular connections, among others to old town with line 9 from the tram station Vozovna Zizkov. It needs about 20 minutes to get there).
- Tram station is 3 minutes walk from the campsite.
- Tickets can be bought on the tram (if I remember correctly, just choose the ticket at the ticket machine and pay with the contactless function of your credit card)
- Here you can find some information to (among other themes) public transportation.
- Info about the castle can be found here.
So here`s my Culinary Guide for Prague

Restaurant Luka Lu
Family business with kitchen from the Balkans and Italy. Each room and the outside area in a courtyard are decorated in an absolutely exceptional and colourful way by the owners themselves. I`ve never seen such a restaurant before and there`s certainly no comparable one. Unfortunately we had a reservation in another restaurant for a short time afterwards, so we only took an aperitif. But we will definitely come back to try the food.
